Access to quality education and keeping children in school was a challenge in most rural schools even pre-pandemic. With the pandemic and series of lock-downs, these schools have had very little if any classes take place - primarily due to the lack of access to technology and teacher training. The current situation has not only kept kids out of schools, but poses a much bigger challenge that they may not return next year at all due to the financial challenges that these families now face.

We are a group of like-minded individuals who have come together that strongly believes that access to education is critical to access emerging opportunities that accompany economic growth.

We would like to do our bit by starting with 1 rural school - N. THAMMANNA EDUCATION SOCIETY (formerly Parinitha Vidya Samsthe) in a government-aided school in Hallegere Village of Mandya District near Mysore. 

About the School

We are currently working directly with N. THAMMANNA EDUCATION SOCIETY (formerly Parinitha Vidya Samsthe),  

The school has been striving for 25 years to provide education to the children of agricultural farm laborers with an average family per annum income of 50,000 Indian Rupees (US $ 694/year). The school currently serves families in the surrounding 7 villages. There have been gaps due to lack of resources and the 2 waves of COVID has aggravated the situation by school closure as a non-medical intervention to deal with the pandemic.

What are our goals?

Our goal is to ensure:

1. School to resume operations

2. Kids are re-enrolled into the school (and parents already under financial stress do not have to worry about the fees, supplies, etc.), 

3. Teachers are trained and enabled to conduct online classes

4. Kids are able to attend classes (online or in-person when schools open for in-person classes).

There are several ways you can make an impact on a child’s education:

• Become a Recurring Sponsor: The cost of sponsoring a child is US $ 84 for a full year ($7 a month for 12 months or $0.23 a day). For this nominal amount, your sponsored student will be fully supported throughout the calendar year. What is our approach?

We have crafted a holistic vision for the school, to create a resilient education system that provides education & learning for all the 500 students. 

We are involved directly with the School Administration and the Headmaster to address some of the key needs: 

• Student needs: school fees assistance for students, enrollment drive, provide school supplies (books, stationery, notebooks, etc.), uniforms, and shoes. We also want to ensure Teachers are retained and trained. 

• Teacher needs: Many of the teachers have not received any salary for a year and the risk of losing teaching staff is high - so we will be providing salary relief for teachers  and training for teachers.

We are working with NGOs such as Empower Ananya and Kshiti Foundation that have extensive experience in working in rural education and technology enablement to address:

• Teacher training: to raise the level of teaching standards as well as cultivate adoption of technology in teaching

• Technology Adoption: provide tablets and other tools for students to access remote learning.

• Training students & Parents on online learning
